abstract = {The return to old building methods by mixing crop by-products with mineral binders is arousing great interest in Europe since about 25 years. The use of these bio-aggregates based materials for the design of building envelopes is a valuable opportunity to deal with increasingly demanding thermal regulations. In addition, the regulatory framework is moving towards reducing the overall car-bon footprint of new buildings. Some traditional and historic buildings are based on timber framing with earth-straw as infill material for instance. Hemp concrete is a bio-based material that can be manually tamped in timber stud walls or more recently in the form of precast blocks. Owing to their low compressive strength, bio-based concretes using a large volume fraction of plant-derived aggregates are only considered as thermal and sound insulation materials. The structural design practice of wood frame walls does not assume any mechanical contribution of hemp concrete whereas it may contribute to the racking strength of the structure. In this context, more research is needed regarding the shear behavior of crop by-products and bio-based concretes. In this case, the objective of the study was to perform direct shear tests under three levels of normal pressure on hemp shiv and rice husk as unbound crop by-products. The results showed that the friction angle of the granular skeleton based on rice husk for a given relative displacement was significantly lower than that measured on hemp shiv. This is in accordance with what had been observed on bio-based concretes cast by mixing aggregates with lime and shear strength parameters measured by means of triaxial compression.},

This paper studies the durability of a new cement matrix based on dredged marine sediment from the Dunkirk-Harbour (northern France). Several techniques are used to characterise the raw sediment, such as physical properties, chemical analyses and mineralogy. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed quartz, calcite and kaolinite to be the main mineral phases. In order to eliminate organic matter and activate some of those minerals, the sediment is calcined at a temperature of 850 °C for 1 h. Moreover, four blended mortars were formulated by mixing a portland cement (CEM I 52,5 N) and the calcined sediment as a partial cement substitute (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%). Reference mortars, based on the blended cement, were then prepared. This re-use cannot be substantiated or efficient without a durability study. For this purpose, the following tests were conducted on those mortars: mercury porosity, accessible water porosity, chloride permeability, freezing and thawing, external sulphate attack, alkali aggregates reaction, compressive and bending strength tests. The results of most of those tests evidenced the fact that the mortar that contains 10% of the treated sediment is as efficient and durable as the reference mortar itself. This infers that the presence of these calcined sediments improves the general behaviour of mortar.},

abstract = {Lime and hemp concretes are used as infill materials manually tamped in timber stud walls or more recently in the form of precast blocks. In either case, the structural design practice of wood frame construction associated with hemp concrete does not assume any contribution of the plant-based concrete whereas it may contribute towards the racking strength of the wall. This work is intended to evaluate the shear behaviour of two different bio-based concretes by means of triaxial compression. Hemp shives and whole rice husks were mixed with a lime-based binder according to the same mix proportioning and mixes were vibro-compacted in cylindrical forms. Then, samples were cured at 23°C – 65%RH before being tested under unconfined and triaxial compression. The triaxial shear test was performed after 60days of curing on unsaturated specimens under drained conditions at air pressure and for increasing effective confining pressure (from 25 to 150kPa). It was possible to estimate the shear strength parameters (peak friction angle and cohesion) of the two plant-based concretes. Comparing results, it appears a consistent value of cohesion but a different friction angle related to the binder and the aggregate contributions respectively. This leads to a first analysis of the relationship between the composition of the concrete (plant aggregates cemented with a binder) and its shear strength. Furthermore, the ductility of plant-based concretes is markedly enhanced as the mean effective pressure increases. Finally, the shear strength of plant-based concretes should be considered as part of the design practice of building envelopes.},

abstract = {In france, erosion by water run-off is estimated to 1.5 t ha-1yr-1 and can exceed 10 t ha-1yr-1 in large growing areas, such as the north of france (nord-pas-de-calais). in this region, the canche watershed (1294 km2) sustains heavy loss of fertile soils. the land use is mainly dominated by arable lands (80%) and in 2013, 104 kt of suspended sediment transited to the estuary. as demonstrated in literature, agricultural soil erosion leads to the gradual disappearance and depletion of fertile soil, which constitute a non-renewable resource at human time scale. additionally, water erosion can significantly damage the aquatic habitat and can be responsible for the input of nutrients, bacteria, pesticides, heavy metals and radionuclides into surface waters. conscious of these effects, many programs have emerged in the nord-pas-de-calais to reduce erosion. this study presents a combination of environmental magnetic proxy parameters and geochemical analyses on sediments and suspended particulate matter. the aim is to develop effective tools to trace erosion by water run-off and quantify this process. in order to identify the respective sediment sources in the canche watershed, sediment trap samples of suspended particulate matter were recovered at key positions along the canche watershed. the preliminary results show that magnetic concentration (mrs) shows typical values for the agricultural soils in the region, but these variations in magnetic concentrations and total irons concentrations are not always correlated, which may be explained by the iron speciation. in calculating the so-called s-ratio for each sample we can distinguish changes in magneto-mineralogy (and thus iron speciation) from magnetite-dominated assemblages in the mainstream canche (naturel background signal) to high-coercivity-dominated assemblages in the tributaries, typical for soil erosion material rich in hematite/goethite. in combination with the element concentrations from icp analyses, this proxy parameter may give valuable insight into the tracing of the suspended sediment sources. in perspective, the seasonal variability and the discharge in the canche watershed have to be taken into account.},

In france, erosion by water run-off is estimated to 1.5 t ha-1yr-1 and can exceed 10 t ha-1yr-1 in large growing areas, such as the north of france (nord-pas-de-calais). in this region, the canche watershed (1294 km2) sustains heavy loss of fertile soils. the land use is mainly dominated by arable lands (80%) and in 2013, 104 kt of suspended sediment transited to the estuary. as demonstrated in literature, agricultural soil erosion leads to the gradual disappearance and depletion of fertile soil, which constitute a non-renewable resource at human time scale. additionally, water erosion can significantly damage the aquatic habitat and can be responsible for the input of nutrients, bacteria, pesticides, heavy metals and radionuclides into surface waters. conscious of these effects, many programs have emerged in the nord-pas-de-calais to reduce erosion. this study presents a combination of environmental magnetic proxy parameters and geochemical analyses on sediments and suspended particulate matter. the aim is to develop effective tools to trace erosion by water run-off and quantify this process. in order to identify the respective sediment sources in the canche watershed, sediment trap samples of suspended particulate matter were recovered at key positions along the canche watershed. the preliminary results show that magnetic concentration (mrs) shows typical values for the agricultural soils in the region, but these variations in magnetic concentrations and total irons concentrations are not always correlated, which may be explained by the iron speciation. in calculating the so-called s-ratio for each sample we can distinguish changes in magneto-mineralogy (and thus iron speciation) from magnetite-dominated assemblages in the mainstream canche (naturel background signal) to high-coercivity-dominated assemblages in the tributaries, typical for soil erosion material rich in hematite/goethite. in combination with the element concentrations from icp analyses, this proxy parameter may give valuable insight into the tracing of the suspended sediment sources. in perspective, the seasonal variability and the discharge in the canche watershed have to be taken into account. |

abstract = {This paper presents an investigation on the origin and magnitude of the internal stresses at the interface between an overlay and an underlying reinforced-concrete slab subjected to cyclic flexural loading. Internal stresses were analyzed with finite-element modeling of two configurations of reinforced-concrete slab panels measuring 3.3 Ã 1.0 Ã 0.2 m: an intact reference slab and a repaired slab with a 40-mm-thick bonded overlay. The research project included experimental testing to measure the evolution of the structural capacity and the cracking behavior of two slab panels with the same configuration and dimensions. Under laboratory cyclic loading, the overlaid slab panel showed some fine horizontal cracks progressing along the interface between the overlay and the substrate slab. The finite-element modeling revealed that the flexural crack pattern significantly impacted the stress field near the overlay interface. Flexural cracking generated stress perpendicular to the interface (normal) in the area located near the flexural crack. The magnitude of the normal stress at the interface increased with bending moment. This can produce local debonding at the overlay interface located near a flexural crack. Cyclic loading was found to promote this possible interface cracking mechanism resulting from fatigue rupture of the bond between the overlay and substrate.},

abstract = {This paper focuses on the incorporation of the sub-product materials based on the fibres and powders as used in the reinforcement of a cement matrix. These reinforcements (fibres and powders) were obtained from recycling by crushing of a thermoset composite based on unsaturated polyester/glass fibre. The mechanical and physical properties of Waste Fibre and Powder Reinforced Concrete (WFPRC) were investigated after optimising the composite. Regarding mechanical properties, the study focused on the effect of the volume of fibres and powders on the flexural, the uniaxial tensile strength and on different mixing energy. Regarding physical properties, the porosity, the orientation and distribution of fibres in a cement matrix were investigated. The results show that the tensile strength of WFPRC increased when both fibres and powders were added. The mixing energy influence strongly the fibres/powder content, the porosity, the distribution and fibres orientation regarding the loading direction of composite. However, the fibres distribution is an important factor for explain efficiency the mechanical behaviour of WFPRC. Fibre-orientation measurement by two-dimensional (2D) image analysis of polished cross-sections is a rapid and highly efficient method for determining the fibre orientation distribution over large sample areas. The results confirm that the rheology and fibre/powder content of concrete has an important influence on the orientation of the fibres and therefore the mechanical behaviour of composite reinforced fibres. The mixture reinforced with 4.4%, 6.2% and 11.54% of fibre/powder present an orientation coefficient ranging from 0.3 and 0.35 which indicate that the orientation of WFPRC is in 3D because the number of fibres is the same in three planes and confirm the poor workability of samples reinforced fibres.},

In this context, the long-term deformation behaviour of Dunkirk sediments is of crucial importance in the evaluation of roadbed deformation.
