This methodology uses measured data (e.g., indoor/outdoor temperature, relative humidity, etc.) and forecast data (e.g., meteorological data) to train a multiple linear regression model to forecast the indoor temperature of the space under study. Using the genetic algorithm optimization method, this model is then used to evaluate the different heating strategies generated. For each strategy, a score is assigned according to user-defined criteria in order to prioritize them and select the best one. By studying an office building simulated under the TRNSYS software, a multiple linear regression model was implemented with errors less than 1% and an adjusted R2 coefficient close to 0.9. Compared to a conventional heating strategy, this methodology can improve thermal comfort by up to 43%. |

Although it is an essential parameter to be considered for structural health monitoring (SHM), its detection by infrared thermography, especially in the heating phase, has not been accessed yet. The detailed analysis and discussions of physical phenomena, known as diffraction and interference, affecting the thermograms during the detection of the steel bars by microwave thermography have given an essential key for resolving this issue. The present paper proposes an innovative methodology with microwave thermography for determining the concrete cover thickness of one-layer reinforcements (12 mm in diameter and regularly placed at 10 cm) in an RC wall (1 m × 1m × 6.5 cm). By using the transmission approach with five angles of microwave antenna direction (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60°) and the Snell–Descartes law and linear law, the proposed methodology leads us to deduce the approximate value of the concrete cover thickness (37.74 mm), which is close to the real value (38 mm), as well as the spacing of the steel bars and dielectric constant of the concrete. The detection of the concrete cover thickness is another new remarkable achievement of infrared thermography methods. |

The document describes primarily the adaptation of a simplified prediction model. The simplified model was developed and validated on the basis of tests carried out with an experimental controlled occultation device by integrating all external parameters influencing heat exchanges (conduction, convection and radiation). A first validation of the numeric resolution algorithm of the preliminary model was realised. Then the model was supplemented by considerations related to the characteristics of the selected plants: ivy and Virginia creeper, such as the semi-transparent appearance of foliage plants and their geometric distribution. The numerical prediction was very close to the experimental values, and the mean error was about 1 °C. This difference makes it possible to validate the developed model. |

Given first an in-house experiment, which allows us to test samples at a macroscopic scale (i.e., close to the real conditions) and to set various types of thermal stresses, and secondly the simulation of the corresponding thermal behavior, relying on an accurate thermodynamical modeling and taking into account the real operating parameters (e.g., thermal contact resistances and non-symmetric heat fluxes on each side), it is possible to characterize the solid and liquid thermal conductivities and heat capacities, as well as the temperature range associated with a non-isothermal phase transition and the associated latent heat. The specificity of the present approach is to allow, in a single step, a characterization of all the involved thermo-physical parameters that are usually required in simulation tools (e.g., EnergyPlus…). Moreover, the hitherto studies dealing with repeatability and uncertainties of the enthalpy characterization are generally very scant and not encountered very often or only with qualitative assessments. This is a clear caveat, especially when considering any system design. Therefore, for the first time ever, the present paper pays a special attention to the repeatability of the identification method and studies the scedasticity of the results, that is to say the deviations of the determined enthalpy curves, not only from a qualitative point of view but also by proposing quantitative arguments. Finally, the results are very promising since the agreement between all trials is excellent, the maximum error for all parameters being lower than 4%. This is far below the current quality thresholds admitted when characterizing the enthalpy of a phase change material. |

Our approach focuses on the processing of data stemming from secondary schools managed by departmental services in the Pas-de-Calais, where 117 secondary school buildings have been instrumented with various sensors and supplying data since 2015. This article starts with a close-up on data mining for water, gas and electricity consumption. Data mining and machine learning methods, including the Clustering approach (K-Means), have been used to extract information from the measurements conducted in 2015 and 2016. This information is used to classify the 2017 measurements according to supervised approaches (SVM). The specificity of this work is to delve deeper into the analysis by combining into the same algorithm a set of various sensors related to both energy use and building occupancy. The main aim is to evaluate the impact of plants occultation on energy performance of a vertical wall in the temperate climate of the city of Lille in northern France. An experimental platform consisting of three identical prototypes (three boxes as thermal labs) has been designed and instrumented. Each prototype has been highly insulated from each face except from the vertical southern wall which was realized with a poor thermal conductivity material. The following measurements were taken: ambient temperature (outside and inside thermal labs), external and internal surface temperatures of southern walls, heat fluxes transferred through south verticals walls (reference and vegetalized walls), solar incident radiation and wind velocity variation under instantaneous real climatic conditions. This enabled the analysis of the variation of energy balance according to the presence or not of a shading effect on the south vertical walls as well as their coverage rate. Several tests were performed on the three experimental thermal labs by imposing a leaf coverage rate which differs during each measurement. The results have shown that masking reduces the outside temperature and enhances the interior thermal comfort especially during summer. |

Mass loss and shrinkage are recorded until stabilization at each RH and T, for up to 1991days. Firstly, our mass loss data are consistent with those presented in former research (on different samples of the same batch). After presenting and analyzing shrinkage kinetics, experimental data are fitted with usual models for shrinkage prediction, at each temperature of 20, 50 and 80°C. An adequate match is obtained by combining capillarity (i.e. Vlahinic's model coupling poro-elastic constants and water saturation level) and desorption (Bangham's equation). Subsequently, relative mass variation (RMV) is plotted against shrinkage εshdry data. Three distinct phases are obtained at 20 or 50°C and down to 30%RH; up to four distinct phases are observed at T = 80°C and down to 12%RH. The latter are confirmed by experiments on (60°C; 7%RH) dried concrete. The four phases in the (RMV,εshdry) diagram are interpreted against shrinkage data on mature cement paste dried at 60°C; 7%RH and against the literature. |

The main theoretical tools of this method are the flatness-based control and the recent new setting of numerical differentiation for fast and on-line parameter estimation. Indeed the estimation techniques form an added value in terms of the reliability of the thermal model. Furthermore, the main advantage of using the differential flatness control scheme is that the system behavior can be described by the trajectory of a so-called flat output and a number of its successive time derivatives. This leads to a simple design of the control strategy without the integration of any differential equations. Numerical simulations as well as comparative studies with a classical PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller are provided to demonstrate the relevance of the proposed approach. |

Firstly, we will present the method developed to determine the function governing the enthalpy with respect to the temperature of the material. It is based on the use of experimental measurements together with an inversion method: by comparing the heat flow with a simulated one, obtained by assuming an a priori formulation of the enthalpy (which set some basic thermodynamical constraints), we may calculate the numerical values of the associated parameters. Secondly, we will show that this method can be extended to macroscopic and heterogeneous materials, which are more representative of real samples. Eventually, we will show on some examples of thermal buildings simulations the necessity to correctly represent the PCM behaviour if one wants to use them in the future so as to save energy and for a better comfort. |
